Steps for Enrollment
-
Locate your
course. A
list of courses offered this semester via distance
learning is located in the printed course schedule
and on this website (see links at right). Details
are listed in the body of the schedule publication.
If you can’t find the course you need in our
schedule, Kilgore College participates in the
Virtual College of Texas. Visit our
VCT page
for more information.
-
Check your
resources.
Be sure to note any special lab software or other
requirements as noted in the course list.
-
Enroll.
Students follow the
same procedures for enrolling in distance education
courses as they do for traditional courses.
-
Attend online
orientation.
You will learn how to
get started and complete your course by visiting the
orientation web site. Students should access the
orientation web site between
the dates indicated on the printed schedule and on
this website. Orientation should be
completed before class starts. (See orientation link
to the right.)
-
Contact us if you
are having problems.
The last step in
orientation is to send an email to your instructor.
If you are having problems that can’t be resolved
with your instructor, contact the
Distance Education Department.

Frequently Asked Questions
 |
What are the minimum computer requirements that I need?
A
Pentuim-class computer
running Windows 3.1 or higher with at least a 28.8 Kbps modem and access to the web
through an Internet Service Provider, such as AOL or a local company, is required.
The open computer lab in the Bone Learning Center also has Internet connected computers
which may be used to complete your web-based coursework. Of course, the speed of
your computer, the speed of your modem, and the quality of your Internet connection are
all factors which can affect the speed at which your course materials can be
accessed. In this case, more and faster is definitely better. |
 |
How do I communicate with my instructor?
You can use e-mail, snail-mail (regular
postal service), or POTS (plain old telephone service) to contact your instructor with
questions, submit assignments, or comment on the course. Many courses have built-in
discussion groups in which you, other students, and the instructor can post electronic
threaded comments to a common course area. This information is then accessible to
everyone participating in the course. Another method of group or one-on-one
communication that many classes utilize is the use of private chat rooms. Some
instructors may require you to visit your class chat room at a specified time in order to
participate in a "cyber-lecture". |
 |
What computer skills do I need to be successful in this type of course?
If you are
reasonably comfortable with surfing the Internet and have average keyboarding skills, you
should do fine. |
 |
Do I have to come to the Kilgore College campus?
Some courses require you to
come to the campus for testing, while others offer on-line testing.
