Using videotaped course lectures, you can take classes when your schedule allows.   For traditional telecourses, all you need is your own TV and a VCR - it's that simple!

Steps for Enrollment

  1. Locate your course.  A list of courses offered this semester via distance learning is located in the printed course schedule and on this website (see links at right).  Details are listed in the body of the schedule publication.  If you can’t find the course you need in our schedule, Kilgore College participates in the Virtual College of Texas.  Visit our VCT page for more information.

  2. Check your resources.  Be sure to note any special lab software or other requirements as noted in the course list.

  3. Enroll.  Students follow the same procedures for enrolling in distance education courses as they do for traditional courses.

  4. Attend online orientation.  You will learn how to get started and complete your course by visiting the orientation web site.  Students should access the orientation web site between the dates indicated on the printed schedule and on this website.  Orientation should be completed before class starts. (See orientation link to the right.)

  5. Contact us if you are having problems.  The last step in orientation is to send an email to your instructor.  If you are having problems that can’t be resolved with your instructor, contact the Distance Education Department.

How long do I have to complete the course?

Telecourses are set up to last approximately 15 weeks during the long semesters and 12 weeks in the summer.  Registration and fee payment dates, withdrawal and refund dates, as well as dates for final exams and grade reporting may be slightly different from the traditional long semester.  These dates are posted in the schedule insert each semester on the distance learning information page.

How do I get the materials for the course?

The Kilgore College Bookstore, located in the Duvall Student Center on the Kilgore campus, stocks the required textbooks for telecourse offerings.  These are also available during regular registration at Kilgore College - Longview.  The videotape lecture portions for most courses may be checked out at the library or viewed over several local cable television systems.  Most students return the tape for the completed unit when they come to campus for testing, then check out the tape for the next unit.   A unit corresponds to several chapters in the textbook.

Do I have to come to campus?

Yes, but not as often as necessary for a traditional class.  Generally, you are required to attend an orientation session at the beginning of the semester.  The dates, times and locations for orientation are published in the distance learning section of the course schedule bulletin published each semester.  Most instructors schedule an informal review session with others students enrolled in your class before each test.   Attendance at these sessions may or may not be mandatory, depending on your instructor.  The review sessions give you, the student, an opportunity to discuss the information covered in the unit and ask any unanswered questions and are highly recommended.  As mentioned earlier, students also be required to come to campus in order to take unit tests and check out/return course videotapes.
