Course Description:

Physics 1405 is for non-science majors desiring a laboratory science course, and for science/engineering majors who would profit from a concepts-oriented (preliminary) exposure to physics.  The course includes mechanics (motion, force, momentum, & energy), properties of matter, heat/thermodynamics, electricity/magnetism, light, and (as time allows) 20th-century physics.  Prerequisite:  ability to enroll in ENGL 1301.

Textbook:

“Conceptual Physics,” 10th Ed., by Paul Hewitt.  There are 35 chapters and 700 pages in the textbook.  We will concentrate on the first several chapters, then select from other parts of the book.

Course Philosophy:

The intention is for you to begin an investigation into the order of the universe, to observe (in a purposeful way) how the world works.  The course is about ideas & concepts.  It is also about expressing these with numbers, but the main emphasis will be on the concepts.

We will work some problems, but often you will  be asked to show   understanding qualitatively, rather than by quantitative calculations.
