This course is intended for the pre-service elementary education student.

Course Description:

Math 1351.  Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II.                                               

This course includes the study of geometry, probability, and statistics, as well as applications of the algebraic properties of real numbers to concepts of measurement with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.  One of the principal goals of this course is to impart to the student a positive attitude toward mathematics and an increased willingness to learn the mathematical content, skills and effective teaching techniques necessary to become a competent teacher of mathematics.  Prerequisites:  College algebra (MATH 1314) or equivalent.

Dependable internet access – most students are dissatisfied with the dial-up connection.

Web browser such as internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape (Course Compass is not compatible with the AOL  browser).  You will need to be able to disable a pop-up blocker at times.

Grades for Course:

Online Assignments: Online assignments include homework problems, quizzes, online activities using manipulatives and written activities from the activities manual.  All online homework and assignments corresponding to a particular exam must be completed prior to due date.  You may work ahead, but I will not accept late work.

Tests:  There will be 4 major tests and a comprehensive final exam. Each test must be taken in a proctored testing center during the week it is scheduled.  The phone number for the Kilgore College Testing Center is 903-983-8215.  You will need to make an appointment (call 2-3 working days in advance).  If you are a VCT student, you should contact your local college’s testing center.  Turn in your activities to the attendant in the testing center for them to fax, mail, or scan and email to me.  You may be required to show your student ID or some form of picture ID at the Testing Center.    

 Final:   A comprehensive final exam will be administered during final exam week.

Grade computation:

Online homework, quizzes and activities:  40%
Tests (4 equally weighted):  40%
Comprehensive final exam:  20%

 I would like to encourage communication with me and other students in class.  We will be using the DISCUSSION BOARD on Course Compass to facilitate this.  This is an area where I can communicate with you and you can also communicate with each other.  Meaningful participation in the discussion board will help everyone.

 Course Policies:

 Any student violating the honor code may receive a failing grade in this course.  While student interaction is encouraged, each student is expected to develop his own solutions to assignments.  A student may not under any circumstances use or copy another’s work and represent it as his own.

 Students should plan to spend 8 to 12 hours each week on this course.

Getting Started in MyMathLab.  We are not using WebCT for this course - we will be using CourseCompass (MyMathLab) instead.  Once you have purchased MyMathLab student starter kit you may proceed with the registration process. 

If you were enrolled last semester in MATH 1350 or MATH 1351, then you do not need a new student access code.  Go to http://students.pearsoned.com  and click "View your account summary".  You will then enter your login name and password.  On the next page click "Enroll in a new course" and enter the following course id:  "thrower08097".  You are finished - proceed to the section titled:  "To complete your orientation for this class" at the bottom of the page.

New Students:

1.      Go to http://students.pearsoned.com.

2.    Click “Register” and follow the onscreen instructions.

3.    If you have used MyMathLab previously you may use the same login name and password although you will need a new student access code for this course.  You may choose to act as a new user and enter a new login name and password.  Be sure to write down your login name and password.  Your teacher cannot retrieve it for you.

4.   At some point you will be asked to enter your Access code (use TAB key to skip between boxes), the school zip code (75662 for Kilgore College), school country (United States), your name (as it appears on the class roll), and a valid email address.  All VCT students are enrolled as if they were Kilgore College students for MyMathLab.

5.      Your course id for this class is   “thrower08097”.

6.      Enter a security question and answer so MyMathLab support team can email you your login name and/or password if you lose it. 

7.      You can click “Log in Now” to go directly to Course Compass / MyMathLab. 

Installing plug-ins for MYMATHLAB 

1.      Go to http://students.pearsoned.com

2.      Log in using your login name and password.

3.      Look for the Installation Wizard button.

4.      Follow the on screen directions to download and install all the plug-ins for this online course. 

5.      Remember that these plug-ins need to be installed on any computer that you wish to use to access MyMathLab.  The computers in the KC library already have these plug-ins installed.

6.      Click on the Assignments button.  Print the course syllabus, assignment checklist, MyMathLab directions, and scavenger hunt. 

7.     Last Step - After you have found all of the answers for the scavenger hunt, click "Take a quiz" and fill in the answers on the "Scavenger Hunt".
