Welcome to class!
You must have reliable access to the Internet for this class.  To get started, first, send me your email address.  It is helpful to have a way to contact you outside of WebCT.  For most communications let's use the mail in WebCT.

How to logon:

This online course uses a web-based course management system called WebCT.  I highly recommend that you print the instructions for logging on if you have not used WebCT software before.

Your WebCT account will automatically be set up for you during the first week of school.  *You do not need to create your own user id!!  Directions for accessing your WebCT account are available on the Resources page of this web site.

Textbook:

The American People, 5th edition, brief.  Nash.  Pearson-Longman.

Course Structure:

1.  Discussion:  There will be 1 discussion questions posted each week that you must respond to.  I will ask you a question that is designed to get you to read or think about a subject.  I will often try to gear the question into how it relates today.  The discussion question will be posted under the "Discussion" link found in the WebCT menu, to the left of the page.  If the discussion is late, there is a penalty (see syllabus).  Discussions account for 5% of your total grade  I encourage students to respond to each other's discussions.  The more you participate, the better the class is.

2.  Web Assignments:  Usually, each week students will be assigned a website(s) to visit and will be expected to write a short review.  These website observation essays will account for 25% of the total course grade.

3.  Exams:  There will be 3 exams in this course, the material for which will be drawn from textbook reading assignments.  Study guides will be provided.  Exams will include multiple choice, matching, essay, and short answer questions.  Students should plan on coming to a KC Testing Center (or an alternate testing center if someone has a valid reason) to take each exam.  Exams will account for 70% of the course grade.  Make up exams will only be given in extreme cases (see syllabus).

This class is not difficult but is TIME CONSUMING!

You will be doing a lot of reading of the text book in order to find the answers to the test questions.

You will not do well in this class if...

bulletYou do not read the syllabus carefully
bulletYou do not learn to navigate through WebCT
bulletYou do not do the study guides and study them
bulletYou do not post discussions
bulletYou send the website observation essays in late or not at all.
bulletYou are not a good reader
