Course Description:    

A study of the United States from Reconstruction to the present.

 

Texts: 

(1)  The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People Volume II: From 1865 (4th edition)

 

(2)  Distance Learning Study Guide for the Unfinished Nation (from 1865) by Namorato & Palmer

 

Supplies: 

Videotapes/DVD's checked out from Randolph C. Watson Library on Kilgore campus.

Check-In/"Attend" deadline:  January 28, 2009.  You must contact me by January 28th or you will be dropped from the course for non-attendance.  (Send email as instructed at bottom of this page.)

Last day to drop with a grade of "W":  April 9, 2009.  If you fail to complete the course and do not drop before this date, you may receive a grade of "F". 

Last day to test in the Kilgore College Testing Center:  April 30, 2009.  

Drop Policy:

It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of and follow the Kilgore College drop policy. 
After January 28th (the check-in/attend deadline), I will not drop a student unless you request for me to do so by e-mail or telephone.

 

Testing and Grading:

The course is divided into 3 units as shown below.  At the completion of a unit, students will take a test. 

 

Test I Lessons 27-31 Chapters 16-19 Video Episodes 27-31
Test II Lessons 32-37 Chapters 20-24 Video Episodes 32-37
Test III Lessons 38-44 Chapters 25-29 Video Episodes 38-44

 

Each test consists of 45 multiple-choice questions (90 points) and one (10 points) essay question for a total of 100 points.

 

Test Dates: 

There are no required tests dates, however, no examination may be taken after April 30, 2009.

 

Optional Extra Credit: 

 

  1. Flames & Vengeance by Stroud.  The book is available in the KC bookstore.  The student is to read the book, then tear out the MC test at the back, take it and leave the test with the testing center. A score of 100=10 extra credit points, a 90=9, 80+8, and etc.

  2. Summarize the study guide I send before each test. Each typed summary is worth five points, fifteen maximum.

B         240 - 269

C         210 - 268

D         180  - 209

F          0 - 179

 

Course Procedure:

The videotapes are to be checked out at the front desk of the library.  You will check out the DVD for Unit One.  When you have completed the DVD and textbook lessons for the first unit (as described in the telecourse guide), you are ready to take your fist test. 

 

The next step is to contact the testing center at (903) 983-8215, or e-mail them at testing@kilgore.edu to set up your test appointment.  The center will be open for testing Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, (last appointment is at 7pm).  No testing available on Friday. Appointments for tests may be made Monday-Thursday 7:45 am to 4:30 pm, Friday 7:45 am to 4:00 pm, and must be made 24 hours in advance through the testing center.  A photo ID is required to take the test. Write your name, History 1301, and test number in the provided spaces

 

Students must schedule their testing at least 24 hours in advance through the testing office, and bring photo ID. Indicate history 1302 in subject space, and test number in provided space.

 

Once you have completed the test you are to retune that unit’s DVD to the library and check out the next unit’s. 

 

Please e-mail me that you’ve completed the test and I will reply with your grade.

 

Study Tips from a Successful Telecourse Student:

Take the practice test (essay and multiple choice) BEFORE reading the assignment.  This will alert you to the importance of the people and events as you read the material. Then look at the LESSON OBJECTIVES and FOCUS POINTS to reinforce what the authors believe you should gain from the reading. Once you’ve finished the reading assignment, re-take the practice tests until you feel comfortable with the material.
